May 13th Bulk Trash Pick Up for American Disposal Customers

ATTENTION American Disposal Customers:  Bulk trash pick up is coming May 13th! 

1) FOUR (4) “bulk” items max per customer (bulk could mean anything from a furniture item such as a chair, sofa, mattress, or carpet to bicycle, gym equipment, etc. ).  If you leave out more than 4 items, they will choose the 4 to take and leave the rest in your property for you to bring back into your house

2) PROHIBITED ITEMS: see list of prohibited items below; however, use the presence of chemicals, solvents, petroleum based products as a guide for what not to try to dispose of…thus, no paint cans, propane tanks, used oil, etc.  (These can all be recycled at the Fairfax County Waste Management Complex)

3) No “routine” garbage items.   (*This is not intended as an extra garbage pick-up day, so they will not pick-up trash bags, lawn debris, etc.)  

4) If you are NOT an American Disposal customer, your bulk trash will NOT be picked up.  We tried to negotiate a bulk trash pick up with New Republic, but they declined to participate.

5) Your dues need to be paid in full for 2017!!! This service is for dues paying American Disposal customers..

May 6 Community Yard Sale

Get ready for the Community Yard Sale on Saturday, May 6!

*Start gathering your treasures NOW to sell on May 6th. Plan how you are going to display your items and price them before the sale day.

*The civic association will advertise the CW Yard Sale but you can do posters or place your own ad on Craig’s List, etc. to direct customers to your specific house.

*Have two people working your site – you’ll need bathroom breaks!

*Possible light rain? Use your garage or a tent on your driveway.

*If you have only a few items, you can go in with one or two nearby neighbors to make a bigger showing. Or you can take items before Saturday (and get a tax deductible receipt) to Tammy and Kathy’s yard sale at 8503 Queen Elizabeth (703-425-1249); they will continue their tradition of donating the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

*YES, you can have a bake sale/lemonade stand to draw customers!

*Don’t forget to decide in advance what you’ll do with stuff that doesn’t sell. (If your trash service is American Disposal, and you want to get rid of several large items, see the posting about the American Disposal Bulk Trash Pick up Day on May 13th.)

BRADDOCK ROAD TASK FORCE MAKES FIRST RECOMMENDATIONS – NO ADDITIONAL LANES ON BRADDOCK ROAD
No additional lanes should be built on Braddock Road from Guinea Road to the Beltway. Instead, a series of intersection improvements, including significant adjustments to the Burke Lake Road and Wakefield Chapel Road intersections, and access management techniques – making some unsignalized intersections right in right out only – should be built. These were the initial recommendations of the citizen task force that has studied the corridor in depth over the last two years. County transportation staff concurs in the recommendations, which were presented to the community at a public meeting last night, sponsored by Supervisor Cook and attended by about 300 residents.
The task force also presented pedestrian and bicycle options, but not recommendations, which will come later in the spring. These include construction of mixed use paths on both sides of the road, completion of all missing trail connections, and one or more pedestrian overpasses. The group is especially interested in residents’ opinions on pedestrian overpasses.
The task force set aside the question of whether to build a transit center. Once road and pedestrian recommendations are finalized, then the group will take back up the transit center questions. Options for transit will be presented to the public at a community meeting in the late spring.
Implementation of these recommendations would present only one-third the cost of adding lanes to the roadway. The study showed that adding lanes would increase the number of trips handled by the road, but travel times would not decrease as much as with the intersection and access management improvements because extra cars would be drawn to the road. The intersection improvement plan shows fairly significant reductions in travel time when compared with the no-build option. The study was based on a 2040 planning horizon. The no-build option showed significant degradation in road conditions and significant increases in travel time compared to today.
